The Gatsby Benchmarks are central to the Government’s Careers Strategy (published December 2017) and the statutory guidance (published January 2018 and updated October 2018). The Gatsby Benchmarks are not a statutory framework but by adopting them, schools can be confident that they are fulfilling their legal duties to ensure that all pupils at the school are provided with independent careers guidance from Year 8/S2 (12-13 year olds) to Year 13/S6 (17-18 year olds). The DFE expects that schools will begin to work towards the Gatsby Benchmarks now and meet them by the end of 2020.
